O'Hare airport hosted the 2015 Channel Your Inner Chef Competition on March 31, 2015, in Terminal 2.
The five finalists were selected after completing phase one, during which they recorded a five-minute video of themselves preparing original culinary dishes. During Tuesday's competition, each finalist had three mandatory ingredients, a starch, vegetable and protein, and had to make their own dish in 30 minutes. The chef contestants were also required to pick an ingredient from the O'Hare Urban Garden to add to their meal. Possible choices included several varieties of basil, lettuce, parsley, dill, cilantro, thyme, oregano and green beans.
The winner, Nikkia Stone, is a line cook for HMSHost, the company that created the competition. She created a blackened jerk chicken and butternut squash dish that was tasty enough to win. Her victory comes with two VIP tickets to the May 4, 2015, James Beard Award Gala, which will take place at the Lyric Opera in Chicago.
